Facts and Figures about BCEGS Grades around the Country
This page has information describing the state of building code enforcement in the United States.
The information can help you benchmark your community’s level of enforcement against other cities and towns in your state and in the country as a whole. Select from options below for distribution by state.
Distribution of Communities by BCEGS Class Number within Classification
The personal lines classification addresses building code adoption and enforcement for 1- and 2-family dwellings. The commercial lines classification is for all other buildings.
A customized BCEGS report is available by mail or email from ISO. The report contains details of the latest ISO review of your community’s building code adoption and enforcement services (that is, your BCEGS grading). The report is available, free of charge, to your community's building official or chief administrative official.
Please mail your request on building department letterhead or your chief administrative official’s letterhead to the ISO National Processing Center.

Note: Average state classifications and scores are calculated using the latest available BCEGS results from graded communities in each state. As ISO evaluates communities on a 4-to-5 year recurring cycle, data used in the averages may not be from the same period in time. Averages are not weighted, and no community data is counted more than once in the calculation of a state’s average.
