The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a fire department as “an organization for preventing or extinguishing fires.” Fire prevention has always been part of a fire department’s responsibilities. But for many years, it seemed like the pendulum was frozen at the extreme end of the extinguishment side, taking up most of the time, money, and energy. Over the past few years, however, the pendulum may have moved slowly toward the prevention side.

More departments are starting to include more fire prevention and community risk reduction programs in their activities, training, and budgets. That includes conducting residential home inspections. Should conducting residential home inspections be a vital part of a fire department’s operation?
